President Colin MacLock has received Diplomas and Certificates of Fine Arts with majors in Sculpture from the Alberta and Kootenay Colleges of Art, as well as a BFA from Notre Dame University in Art History. He has worked as a fine artist in Victoria for over 26 years, has been an active member of the Island Illustrators since 1986, serving a term as its President, and is one of the founders of the Esquimalt Lantern Festival and the West Bay Residents’ Association. As chair of the Work Point Arts Project, Colin MacLock fought to create a home for a Regional Centre for Visual and Related Arts in a surplus historic DND building at Work Point.

Vice-President Dr. Erika Kurth, Chair of Awards and Scholarships Program, is a founding member of the CACGV, has served on the Board since 1968. She was the first editor of our Arts magazine, and for 25 years was the Producer & Host of the Arts Calendar show on Rogers and Shaw Cable. Artists were interviewed by Dr. Kurth, including Ravi Shankar, Robin Skelton and Maxwell Bates. A voice teacher since 1977 at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, Dr. Kurth has performed voice on CBC, with the Victoria Symphony, the UVic Symphony, and the California and Oakland Symphonies. She has also performed the leading roles in The Magic Flute and the Barber of Seville operas. In 1997, Kurth received an Honourary Doctorate from UVic.

Secretary Ruby Della Siega, Chair of Communications Program: A graduate of UVic, Ruby has spent the last 22 years as an Advertising Account Manager for Monday Magazine. She has been an active volunteer with the Downtown Victoria Business Association and the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce and has been on the CACGV board since 1993. Ruby was instrumental in the development of our Arts Resource Guide and Directory, bringing Monday Magazine in as its producer in 1993. The Directory has been a successful publication for the CACGV and community arts ever since. Ruby was also on the Board of DanceWorks for two years and continues to be an advocate for community arts & development in Victoria.

Dr. Pat Martin Bates, Chair Curatorial Programs, is an internationally recognized printmaker - was a founder of Signal Hill, an artists’ co-op which morphed into X-Changes Studios/Gallery. She has been part of the CACGV and our Board since its inception in 1968. She received her degree in Fine Art from the Royal Academie des Beaux Arts in Antwerp, Belgium. She has traveled, taught & researched in India, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Japan and Thailand. She taught for years at UVic, where she received an Honourary Doctorate. Pat has Chaired the Royal Academy of Arts, Pacific Region and is a founder and Chair of the Victoria College of Art & Design. Pat was also the first woman to receive the Women of Distinction Award in Arts and Culture in Victoria. Major publications include “Passion for Art” by Pat Bovey who is currently writing a monograph called “Visual Bridging-Pat Martin Bates”. Her works are in the National Gallery of Canada, Library of Congress in Washington, and the Museums of Modern Art in New York and Tokyo.

Robert Williams - Bob Williams has been a member of the Vancouver Island Sculptors Guild for 5 years and is their current
President. He sculpts in clay, wood and stone, and has participated in a number of group art shows, including the CACGV, Maritime Museum, The Bay Centre and Victoria Arts Connection. For the past three decades he has been in a management capacity in the private sector and government including marketing research, communications, liaison with community groups and government agencies, program delivery and evaluation, and project management.
He received a Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) from York University (Toronto) and a Master of Arts (Natural Resource Management) at the University of British Columbia. Bob is currently taking violin lessons with Louise Deschamps of Kumbia, he has seasons’ tickets for the UVic Phoenix Theatre and regularly attends live theatre and music performances.

Patricia Walter, Finance Committee and Special Events, was a Nutritionist at the Victoria General Hospital and wrote government pamphlets on Vegetarian Foods when she was involved with R.E.A.C.H. - a community clinic in Vancouver. Working in therapeutic diatetics, she was always a strong advocate for holistic approaches to health and well-being, seeing the arts and self-expression as key to mind/body health. Her many passions include early childhood education, gardens, and advocacy for pregnant and nursing mothers. Patricia has served on the Boards of KidCo, the Rockland Association (President), the Oak Bay Heritage Foundation and twice, now, on the CACGV Board. She is currently a Medical Manager and a Property Manager. Her motto: Something to do, something to love and something to hope for.

Flo-Elle Watson, Arts in Education and Special Events, is an Oak Bay Artist and porcelain painter who has recently retired after thirty years of working in Special Education for School District #61. She was a founding member of the BC Special Olympics Victoria and has remained a volunteer with them for the last twenty-five years. Flo-Elle has been on the CACGV Board for the last 5 years, representing Oak Bay. A founding member of the Oak Bay Community Artists Society, she is a coordinator of the Annual Oak Bay art show and the annual Bowker Creek Brush-Up every August.

Sheila Blake, Chair of Performing Arts, from Scotland, received her BSc at St. Andrew’s and after marrying and coming to Canada in 1953, lived in Pincher Creek, Edmonton, Toroto, Montreal and Halifax before settling in Victoria in 1966. She has been with the Music Festival Dance Section since 1973 and is its Past President. She was on the Inter Cultural Association Board in the 1970’s and 80’s. A Science and Math substitute teacher, Sheila Blake has also taught Folk Dance at Cedar Hill, Gordon Head and Henderson Rec Centres, district schools, the UVic Folk Dance Club and in the UVic Phys Ed Department. Further teaching includes the Multicultural Deptatrment of the BC Teachers Federation in many BC communities and at Dance and the Child International Conference in Auckland NZ. She is currently also on the Board of Theatre Inconnu

Gloria Daly - Cowichan Valley Fibre Artist
Gloria S. Daly brings many years of board experience, both
in the arts and business. Presently she is a Director on
the Island Savings Credit Union Board, a position she has
held for the past nine years. Gloria’s interest in Surface Design and the Fibre Arts began with traditional embroidery and developed into contemporary original works of art. Graduating from the City & Guilds
program in Design and Embroidery along with Level One Studies
in the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree Embroidered Textiles,
Opus, Middlesex University, UK, she has continued to create
original works for exhibition and teaching. Combining traditional
and non traditional materials and methods Gloria continues
to challenge her students to create their own unique works.
Her work ranges from small intimate embroideries to large
quilted wall hangings and installation pieces. She teaches
and lectures at textile forums, art galleries and workshop
venues.

Executive Director Paul Scrivener received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy at UVic in 1973, a Masters of Indology from Kashmir, India and a Bachelor of Applied Arts from Ryerson Film and Photography Department. His professional work includes photojournalism, fashion photography, project manager for the arts and multi-media production in Toronto. Paul volunteered for ten years as a video technician on the televised Arts Calendar with Erika Kurth on Rogers/Shaw cable. He was also a CACGV Board member for five years before becoming its Curator and Administrator. He has taught English in Iran and made a QuickTime VR CD on Zen Gardens in Kyoto, Japan. In 1999 the Assembly of BC Arts Councils recognized Paul for his outstanding commitment to community cultural development in BC, in 2004 he was recognized as Arts Leader of the Year by the CFAX Community Awards and he has been profiled in both Focus and Boulevard magazines. |

Arts Administrator Alexis Celona, after spending 13 years in Europe, returned to Canada, becoming an artist and art instructor to adults and children for sixteen years, ten of them in the Island Blue Print Studio teaching oil and acrylic painting. She has been involved in Arts in Education with the CACGV since 1998 when Jo Randall-Williams was the Chair of Arts in Education, working with children, teens, Home Learners, youth-at-risk, foreign exchange students and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization. Alexis’ dedication to emerging artists and grassroots community building earned her a nomination for the Women of Distinction Award in 2005. |

Administrative/Curatorial Assitant Sarah Rostami Sarah Rostami grew up in Los Angeles, California, but tiring of the constant sunshine and celebrity sightings relocated to Vancouver to study English and Philosophy at UBC. In a Goldilocks-like fashion she soon grew weary of the dismal dampness, but has now found the perfect fit by settling into Victoria. Sarah has earned a Master's Degree in English from UVic, specializing in late-Victorian literature. She is pleased to expand her focus from literary arts and promote the interests of all local artists in her new favorite city.
