CACGV Arts in Education Program 2005/2006

In 05/06, a project with First Nations students at Esquimalt High School culminated in a drumming circle led by a Chief from the Haida Nation. Alexis Celona was invited to attend and take part in the dancing which was led by Janet Marie Rogers; Janet is the Mohawk spoken word performer who worked with us in our Artstarts grant (at A-Channel TV with the Esquimalt High School youths). Janet also taught the workshop in drum-making, the drums will be exhibited in our Arts in Education Show in late April - May 10th, 2006. Written works by the same students will also be mounted at the show.

A “Photo Safari” project has just been completed with students from Central Middle School. Eleven Korean, Japanese and Mexican students took pictures of urban details with artist Claudia Lorenz. The third session was held at XChanges Gallery where Board member Layla Casper joined us for the tour of the gallery and studios; the children then created their artworks with their pictures and “urban debris” with instruction by Claudia.

The Original Crew

“The Original Crew” is the dance group from Pacific Secondary School taught by choreographer/dancer Layla Casper. They worked together for 8 months and did three performances: at the CAC Arts in Ed. Opening Night, Cedar Hill Rec Centre’s Opening Events on April 29th, and at Youth Week. This is the first time ever that students from Pacific Secondary School have done a performance.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Victoria is doing an art project with Alexis on Sat. & Sun. April 8th and 9th with theat their premises in downtown Victoria. Five ”matches” - one child with one adult - will participate.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters

A calligraphy session was arranged for Sunday May 7th (during the Arts in Education Show) with Andy Lou teaching a group of children to form the letters with Chinese ink and brushes. His own children will demonstrate.
The entire visual arts part of the Arts in Education Show went from the CAC Gallery to the Wilfred Johns Gallery at UVic on June 15th, 2006.

CACGV Arts in Education Program - 2004/2005

The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria’s Arts in Education program for 2004-2005 consisted of six projects in five local schools: District 61 schools included Vic High School, James Bay Community School, and S. J. Willis Alternative School; District 93 schools were Victor Brodeur Elementary and High Schools. This year’s projects included five different arts disciplines, an expansion which saw theatrical and music performances added to the visual arts components.

1. Victor Brodeur Elementary and High Schools (Lucie Livernoche’s Gr. 6 class & Karen Medalsy’s Gr. 10/11 classes) each designed and created large stained glass windows under the teaching and sponsorship of Dennis and Jason Brady of DeBrady Glass Ltd. (see image).

2. Victor Brodeur High School Gr. 12 students of Karen Medalsy studied Digital Photography with Alexis Celona; as well as photos they created Photoshop alterations at the SIM Lab (Faculty of Fine Arts at UVic) line drawings from the photos, and lamps (photos mounted onto mylar).

3. Vic High School Gr. 12 students of Alan Penty wrote, produced, and acted in a play under the direction of Mr. Penty. The play was performed at the Barbara McIntyre Theatre at UVic, at the CACGV Arts in Ed. Opening Night, at the Cedar Hill Rec Centre Opening for B.C. Arts & Culture Week, and at several Victoria middle schools.
