Who
are we?
The
Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria is a membership
based advocacy organization that works to promote awareness
of the arts, and to ensure that the arts remain a priority
in municipal and provincial government planning and
budgets. We encourage, develop and coordinate artistic
and cultural activities in Greater Victoria. We have
11 members on the Board of Directors, a full-time Executive
Director, a full-time administrator as well as part-time
staff. Our membership is made up of approximately 1,000
people, with 800 individuals and over 80 groups and
societies. We also have regular volunteers. Our members,
both group and individual, represent people from all
disciplines of the arts in Greater Victoria.
Our
Mandate
The
objective of the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria
is to provide advocacy through leadership, partnership
and community involvement, and to increase and broaden
public awareness and
opportunities in artistic and cultural
activities
Our Mission Statement
"The
arts are the vehicle for the preservation, enhancement and development
of our culture."
1. To ensure our
community may enjoy cultural, visual, literary, and performing arts, through
either participation as an artist or appreciation as a spectator.
2. To
raise awareness and appreciation of the value and meaning of the arts and foster
broad community support so that they remain an important priority in municipal
and provincial government budgets.
3. The role
of the Arts Council is to be a:
- proponent of arts advocacy;
- support network of communication, promotion and encouragement for local community
(amateur and professional) artists and arts associations;
- granting body to administer monetary awards, provide space for and sponsor
events, and recognize excellence in achievements and potential in the arts;
- key developer of a positive environment for the arts within our community
through education, civic advocacy, projects and programs that reach artists,
consumers of art, business people, educators, citizens and politicians;
- source of information as an active partner in the cultural development of
our community providing a resource library regarding programs, funding and
artist groups in the local community;
- advocate of Arts in Education programs.
4. To
promote awareness of the arts and improve the quality of life in the community.
5. To
encourage, develop and coordinate artistic/cultural activities in Greater Victoria.
6. To
interpret, promote and publicize artistic/cultural activities in Greater Victoria.
7. The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria
exists to provide leadership, and to promote greater involvement by the
local community in the arts. This includes raising community awareness,
disseminating knowledge, sponsoring events, and providing other appropriate
services.
8. To
develop a positive environment for the arts within our community through education,
civic advocacy, projects and programs that reach artists, consumers of art,
business people, educators and politicians.
9. The
Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria is an active link that seeks to
foster the optimum growth and development of arts in Victoria by creating a
nurturing atmosphere and providing a resource centre that will enable the arts
in the community to develop to their full potential.
10. The Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria
seeks to be an active partner in the cultural development of our community
by promoting and coordinating cultural events rich and vital to any community. By
providing a resource centre this will only stimulate a climate for support
and growth for the arts which will carry us into the future.
11. To provide a focal point and coordinating
body for the promotion and development of a viable and vital arts community. Within
this, the precepts of artistic exploration, public access, and coordination
of individual artists and arts groups with other facets of the community,
including creative liaisons with the business community, will guide the
direction and activities of the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria.
12. To
encourage the development of the arts in Greater Victoria by providing support
for the developing and professional artists and arts organizations through
effective marketing, grant writing and public events.
13. "The arts are the vehicle for the preservation,
enhancement and development of our culture." Our mission is
to assist in the development and delivery of initiatives that will broaden
the base of understanding of, involvement in, and support for the arts
in Greater Victoria.
14. To
promote awareness of the arts and improve the quality of life in the community.

ArtsTalk Newsletter
We
publish ArtsTalk three times a year in the fall, winter
and spring. The May-Aug 08 ArtsTalk is now available
at the CACGV office.
Arts Centre Gallery
*We
have gallery
space available
for the use of our members. Members can show their work, have meetings or
workshops, or use it as a rehearsal space. The arts exhibits in
this space change once every week or two.
Artists Corner
We also run the Artist
Corner exhibition space at the main public
library near the talking books section. The exhibitions
at this space change every two weeks.
Victoria International Airport Gallery
We have two exhibition spaces at the Victoria International Airport: upstairs in Arrivals and on the main floor near the Tim Horton's coffee bar.
Gallery at the Mac
We display our CACGV member artists in the upper and lower levels
of the MacPherson Theatre.
Phantom
Gallery
In the fall of 2005, we added the Phantom
Gallery Project to our Curatorial Programming.
New locations are being added all the time to this exciting
project!
Resource Centre
Our Resource Centre is
located in the CACGV office at G6-1001 Douglas Street.
We've recently re-organized our resources. We have
information about grants, art classes, arts events,
performance events, as well as newsletters from many
arts councils, arts societies and organizations. Come
on in and have a look for yourself, Monday to Friday,
10-5.

Resource Guide and Directory
Every
July we publish an Arts Resource Guide and Directory.
This guide is an invaluable tool for anyone seeking
information on local artists, performers, musicians,
arts resources and venues. The full directory is posted
on our website. Each listing includes membership for
one year.

Our Community Arts Calendar is sent out in bi-weekly emails to our members. If you are a member
and would like to advertise you arts event in both of
